How is life in London,England different from New York?

  • I have always wanted to move to London and live there, and I have read many things about London,England but I never have never went there to visit before deciding to want to live there.A book can't be the same as living there and experiencing what London is all about. I believe one has to go there to find out about the real London, which is why I am asking these questions.I was born and raised in New York City and I come from a third generation Puerto Rican family. What fascinates me the most about England,is the way the people speak English properly compared to Americans, and their culture, football(called soccer only in America)drinking tea,and London's ethnic melting pot,and who said only New York is only diverse?need I say more. I want to move to London no matter what,I want London as my new home no matter what.

  • Answer:

Well, first things first. Both British and Americans speak proper English. In America, our phonetic standard is based on the Midwestern accent (like in Columbus, OH or American newsman’s voice). In the UK, the phonetic standard is based on what they call the BBC accent. As for how life is really different is hard to say. I was in London on vacation for a week and that is no way reflected on how the Londoners really live. I assume they have the same bureaucratic nightmares as New York but they pay a higher percentage in income taxes. It is a fun place for young people when it comes to the night life. However, you best bet is getting some feedback from a Londoner for more social and idiosyncratic details. Suggestion: Try getting a job with an assignment in London for a couple of years. This way you can feel your way through London and decide if you really want to stay at the end of your assignment. It helps to know a second language in addition to knowing English. This means you must know how to write properly in both English and the second language. I am assuming you speak Spanish. Learn how to write properly in Spanish as well as in English. You may never know what opportunities open up for you in London, such as liaison for a company or government agency.

While I am not seeking to dissuade you from moving to London, I would prefer you came with your eyes open. Firstly, they do not all speak English "properly". Like everywhere, there is the 'proper' Queen's English, which we call perceived pronunciation such as you might hear on old BBC radio broadcasts; then there are various dialects, many in London itself. It is diverse and very multi-cultural, with something for everyone. Its history is fascinating and quite visible. Be warned as well that coffee is making big inroads, although we do still drink tea; lots of it. Don't forget there is not just London - there is a half-decent rail network to get around the country to see other equally-fascinating places like Scotland or Wales or the other different parts of England. There are even more diverse accents and regional variations of English out there. I hope that helps. Good luck
