London to Venice by TRAIN - need help with finding reasonable fares?
-
I have found several sites with decent fares for taking the train (yes, I know it's more expensive than flying, but we want to take the train) from London to Venice. We found a good fare from London, that stops for a few hours in Paris, then on to an overnight train to Venice. The problem was that when we went to purchase the fare, it was only good if you paid with a credit card that orginated from the UK. We are from the US (will be flying into London) and couldn't secure that good fare. Please help! Suggestions to legitimate websites appreciated. We leave in just a few weeks.

You've left this way to late, prices will be really expensive now, because booking will be closing soon. But I can try and help. I've had a look at many of the travel websites hoping to find something as I know it's common, but surprisingly there was nothing! I wouldn't reccomend the train personally, as some friends of mine did the trip not so long ago, and found themselves drugged with no money by the end of it. Funny enough I did just read a story about the same thing. It must be reasonably common. But i have some other suggestions. You could drive out to Venice, with a rental car, and then fly back. The trains are expensive and if your up for experiencing the culture of the countries then go for it. If your nervous about driving, your only worries should be in England, the roads in Europe are bare and so smooth. I'll quite easily be hitting 110mph without even noticing. In driving, you probably won't be able to do it in a day, but you can stay in reasonably cheap hotels, such as formula one ( http://www.hotelformule1.com/formule1/gb/cartographie/index.shtml ) Hope you get everything sorted, and email me if theres any questions about things. Claire, :D

Drugged on the train with no money. That sounds like a very rare occurence to me. It would be a fascinating rail journey - you'd see so much of Europe on the way. Have you tried Eurostar? www.eurostar.com or Rail Europe www.raileurope.co.uk There might also be some useful information on www.seat61.com
