Where in London Zone to rent a flat?

Moving to London: Cost Expectancy.?

  • Hi everyone! So, I'm planning on moving to London next September and was wondering how much I should have saved in order to enjoy the move and not have a freak out due to lack of funds. I have a degree in Office Administration and was also wondering about average wages in this field. Basically I'm thinking of renting a one bedroom flat in either zone 2 or 3. I'll be living by myself or possibly a flat share depending on rent. I'm wondering about average rent, bills (water, gas, electric etc.) as well as food bills. I won't be eating out much as I have food allergies so it will mostly be groceries. Also, how long does it usually take to find a flat within these zones? Would booking a hostel for 2 weeks while I look for work and accommodation be extensive? I'm also going to be playing tourist for the first while. I know most of the museums have free admission but how much should I expect to spend on "touristy" things? Sorry for such a long post and thanks in advance to anyone who can help! It's very much appreciated. Heather

Heather, where are you from? Unless you are an EU citizen you can't just up sticks and move to the UK. You'll need a job and a visa BEFORE you arrive and they are difficult to obtain. http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/

At the cheapest, you may get £80 per week flats around zone 2-3. Check http://www.findaproperty.com or http://www.zoopla.co.uk/ Foods are very much available. As you can cook well, I would suggest you to find a flat that will be near to some wet markets. I know a place called Dalston Kingsland where market sits everyday from 9 to 6 on the street. Buying from there is much cheaper. London transportation is the costliest here. Get a oyster card as soon as you reach. Then buy monthly passes. Altogether including living and transportation cost, I will give you an estimate of £330(Housing)+£106(Oyster)+£250(Foods and parties) = £686 at minimum. It's absolutely my estimation. Rest is depending upon you. Regarding the job, my opinion is, London is now one of the toughest places. However, if you can manage one, the starting salary might be around £15,000 per year.
