Do you find London overrated sometimes?
-
I'm 17 and have lived in London for a long time and I do love it but don't you find it a bit overrated from time to time? I mean the rent prices are through the roof and for what? London can actually seem pretty boring sometimes. Like when you go to central London, what is there to do? I know there are amazing shops, restaurants, museums and sights but other than that really what is there? Like I know my friends and other people my age hang out in Trocadero and China Town and places like that but I've been there many times and have found it excruciatingly boring. I also find London as a whole quite ugly, it's just not a very attractive place to look at with only a few exceptions. So why is London so raved about and why is rent so expensive? There are other towns in England where the rent is quite cheap, they have all the shops in London + other cute/vintage out of chain shops, attractive scenery, good restaurants + nightlife, nice people, and plenty of things to do. So why is London so special? Don't get me wrong, I love London and I know I'm very lucky to live here but I just resent the fact that my parents have to fork out loads of money that we can't really afford to live in a place that does seem a bit overrated and that has basically everything other towns have.

Answer:
OK, i don't live in London but i live in a Huge city... Mexico city, and it's the same problem. (But cheaper) It's a big city, it has museums, huge malls,... It's bigger than NY and sometimes is boring, and exasperating. When i travel to Europe, always go to Paris, it's my favorite city, and, i travel cause in Paris i can rest in trocadero, i can dinne a cool food, i love it's museums, monuments and hotels. it's ver, very expensive i know but i love that city. London.. I don't love that city but is interesting to visit the museums anf the hotels, and the expensive and not very good food. London 4 me isn't the capital of the world, but is a important city, in Europe and in the world. Maybe I'll visit London tomorrow, and i hope visit an old and beautiful city.

mate i am the same age as you, i also lived in london for so many years, when i was in london i thought rent is so ******* expensive, so i left london to settle in south east england in southampton, i will tell ya one thing wherever you go every thing is so expensive, now even in this unpopular, not crowd, quite and boring place, i have to pay £635 (including bills) a moth for my single room, for me i would say it's not cheap, and there is nothing to go or do really except college, job and shopping that's all. if you're bored of london, your tired of life mate, london is the only city in the entire uk where loads of things are happening in each second, i dont really find london boring place compare to the rest of uk. good luck anyway.
Because it's London! It's seen as the Capital city of the world! Think of it this way, when you go in a lift/elevator why do you never face the wall but face the door, because you simply do! why do you wear a suit to work when other clothes are far more practical, because you just do! it's societies view on things that no matter how wrong and ill-justified it is, there simply no quick way of changing it And yes London is indeed overrated, New York or Melbourne any-day

No I found it as exciting as I thought it would be. I found Paris over rated. I thought it would be so much better than London but I would say it was about the same.
London is overpriced, not over rated. I agree with you entirely that we pay far too much for simple thinks here in London, £2.90 etc for a simple cup of coffee and worse, £1.50 and more for a cup of tea. The problem with London and it has always been thus, is that the prices charged are those which the people will pay. In other words, if people stopped paying £2.90 plus for a coffee, the price would soon fall. However, the people who pay this huge amount for a coffee are kidding themselves that they can afford it and there is also the snob value of knowing that a poor person cannot pay the same, etc. Thankfully, London does have a lot of things which are free. But don't count on it staying that way for long, because the Coalition government want to start charging to get into the London museums once more. Here below are a some links to free things in London. http://www.londonforfree.net/ http://www.freelondonlistings.co.uk/ http://golondon.about.com/od/thingstodoinlondon/tp/free_London.htm http://www.visitlondon.com/events/arts/london-for-free etc Londoner since 1941 Personally, my partner and me prefer Paris - we go there every year and do 'walk-about' thing. Never a dull moment and there's something new to discover each time we go. Forget the museums and art galleries, just stoll around and take it all in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqiPWt__iL0

I don't mean to sound patronising but you're only 17 so you cant yet know about everything London has to offer. London has something for everyone. Every.Single.Person. You may not like China Town and Trocadero (neither do I) but there are plenty of other places in London. You can do just about anything in London. Also, people are accepted no matter who they are or what they are into. That's what is special about London and that's why people love it so much. I do agree about it being very expensive though but even that, there are always cheaper alternatives to just about anything in London. Have a look around yourself and see where you fit in.

Well, I can see what you mean. When I first came to London seven years ago, I felt like London was indeed overrated, but if you look at it closely and compare it with other cities then you can see it why people like London. If belongs to that list of great cities like New York and Milan, where things happen; things being fashion, business, art or all three. Normal more conventional capitals are quite small and with much smaller attractions. London has the attraction of having things for different people, so everybody fits in. Well, your parents may work all those long hours so they can provide you the experience and the tools London has the offer. It is also easier to find jobs in the capital than in other areas. Either way, your parents could always relocate, which most people do when their kids leave the family home.
