Where the best nightlife places in London?

What's life like over in London for a single woman and are there any good employment agencies/websites?

  • Hello, I'm considering moving from the US to London. Can anyone recommend any really good employment agencies or employment websites in London? Also, I was thinking of looking at flats/homes in West London.. is that a nice area for a single woman (I'm in my mid 30's)? A safe area? What are the salaries like compared to the US? For example if I was making say $70,000 per year here in the US, then what would the salary be in the UK and would someone be able to afford a flat or house in West London on that kind of salary? (sounds silly to be asking, but I'd rather get an idea vs. not.) Does London have any of the US stores like Walmart or Target or Kohl's? How is the nightlife? What is life like for a single woman living in London? Where are the best places to meet people/ hangouts/restaurants? I'm heading over in the fall for the first time and I would like to try and scope out some of the areas and maybe try and get to meet with some recruiters or companies while I'm there. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!

Hey just saw this and your edit. It may come across as negative, it's not, it's just fact. Gaining entry to the UK without a Visa in very hard to do. While you can look for jobs, the fact remains they cannot employ you without your having the right to work here. They can sponsor you, but it's unlikely. No one here in being rude or intentionally being negative, it's just the facts. You either need to obtain a highly skilled tier visa, or come here through a study program and you would be limited to working 20 hours a week MAX. Sorry you feel people have been unhelpful but we do see the same questions over and over again, and when many of the American posters see they cannot just get a job here, they get rather..upset. It's nothing personal. The same way as Brit, I can't just start up work in the USA :0) Have a look at UKBA (UK border Agency) and have a read for what you need to do. Best of luck! Once you research the VISA's then come back and we can all help you with job agencies and all that :0)

Well for a start you probably won't get a visa to live in the UK unless you already have a job lined up, or you have a skill/profession that is in demand. $70k a year is a pretty decent wage, so i'm guessing you probably meet that criteria. Houses in the UK are smallish and expensive compared to the US. Especially in London, and especially in the affluent west end. Places like Knights bridge, Kensington, Notting Hill and Chelsea are quite middle class, and therefore safe (well as safe as you can get living in a major city). £150,000-£250,000 will get you a pretty decent home in these areas, although you can probably get something nicer if you are willing to rent. £750-1200 a month will get you a nice 1 or 2 bedroom house (or more likely apartment). London is one of the most important cities in the world, and has the sort of night-life and entertainment you would expect from such a city. The UK has plenty of supermarkets and department stores. Walmart owns the English company ASDA (pronounced like 'asder'). The closest thing we have to Target is probably Argos.

The above two answers are very much to the point. You need to get your visa and work permit sorted first. I read somewhere in newspapers that half of London women have been raped. Crime is very high in London and rented accommodation very expensive. The cost of transport is also high, compared to many other countries. You need to do more research and good luck for the future.

You'll need a job and a visa before arriving in the UK. You can't look for work on a visitors visa.

Babe, people are trying to help you here, not be negative. As Someone else said, as much as you may not like the answer, facts are indeed facts. No one here has, from what I can see, been negative as you put it. We all see the USA postings asking about moving here and it's just not as simple as that. Now, I can tell you the big name recruitment agencies, but without a Visa, you will not be allowed to even enter the country let alone work. A visa is the only way. Whatever Visa you end up getting is another thing, but a visa in needed none the less. Here are the big name agencies (and it does depend on what industry your in) Hays, Reed, Adecco, Eden Brown, Tate, Office Angels, Brook Street. Feel free to apply for jobs, but they will always ask: *do you have the right to work in the UK* Now, if you have not secured a working Visa, then you do have the right to work in the UK and so will reject your application. Don't give up, nothing wrong in having a goal or dream, but be realistic and the realism here, is that you need to apply for a Visa. If you feel that's negative, you can always take it up with the UK Border Agency or write to the home Office or your local immigration department in the USA.
