Answer:
No, this is not possible. Work Permits do not exist in the UK; not in the sense of "you getting one, and then coming to the UK to work". British work permits allow people already with jobs in other countries to come to the UK to work on behalf of their company here. For example, a French mechanic who works for "CompanyLtd" normally works in France. However, the "CompanyLtd" factory in the UK has broken down and require the French mechanic to come over and fix the UK factory. The French mechanic would then have to apply for a Work Permit, so he can come over here and work. Work Permits are for people already with jobs. You cannot get a permit and then find a job over here. So, in answer to your question, no you cannot change your student visa. However, Student Visa's allow you to get a part-time job, as long as the job does not exceed 6 hours a week.

No you cannot. A student visa entitles you to be in the UK for the purposes of study only. If you take up more than a few hours of work a week, you will be deported back to your own country. It is very difficult to obtain a UK work visa at the moment - the recession means that people who are UK citizens need the jobs more. If you are qualified in something that is in demand in the UK then you might well obtain a work via through the company you work for. These jobs would be things like Doctor, Surgeon, Nurse, Midwife, Physics or Maths teacher. If you are not something that the UK is looking for at the moment then you would probably be turned down for a work permit.

I suspect the answer is no. I was though under the impression that you can do limited work on a student visa. What though is your home country?

There are a few occupations that are on the Skills Shortage list, such as nursing and social care working, that you can get a work permit for, as a non-EEC. applicant. The employer has to register as qualifying, and can then hire applicants and help with the permit documentation.

No, you can not change one type of visa into another - you have to go back to your country of origin and apply for a new visa, if you are eligible.
