Things to do in Southampton and London?

Is it better to stay in Southampton or London for 1 day?

  • I'll be ending a cruise in Southampton in June. My flight back to the US doesn't leave until noon the next day. By the time I disembark the ship and get to London it would be early afternoon. Is it worth it to make travel arrangements to London and spend the remainder of that day sightseeing or am I better off staying in the Southampton area and doing some sightseeing in that area - and then making my way to Heathrow the next morning. I'm just concerned that with so little time in London it may not be worth the hassle (and expense) of seeing it in 1/2 day.

I lived in Southampton for 10 yeas and I now live in London - so I can see the advantages of both cities. I also worked on a cruise ship so I know the disembarkation procedure and the location of the Mayflower Terminal ! I think by the time you disembark, travel to London with your luggage and check into a hotel, there will be less time to sight-see than you imagine. If I were you I would book into Southampton's best hotel, The De Vere Grand Harbour (which is 5 mins from the Terminal). Stroll around the Old Town and perhaps catch the Isle of Wight Ferry from Town Quay (opposite the hotel) and spend the afternoon visiting Cowes - which is the home of British sailing and a lovely place to visit. You could then enjoy a meal in Murray's (the islands best fish restaurant) before catching the ferry back to Southampton. If you want shopping, Southampton's West Quay Centre is the largest shopping mall in the South East. And if a trip to the Isle of Wight doesn't interest you, you are just 30 mins away from either Winchester or Salisbury with their wonderful Cathedrals and Roman history.

Definately check out London, the best sights are there plus the shopping (generally or souvenirs) shouold be much better than Southampton.

I love London - but geographically it makes little sense to go to central London for the night and then drive all the way back to Heathrow. Southampton is not exactly tourist material. Depending on what mode of transport you have at your disposal, I would suggest you leave Southampton right away and go to a beautiful place that is in the right geographical direction; and that is kind of close-ish to Southampton, so that the place is still open for business, and it is not getting dark outside before you get there. Based on these criteria, I would suggest Winchester, England's former capital with it's famous cathedral. http://www.visitbritain.co.uk/destinations/England/south-east/Winchester.aspx Alternatively, you could visit the (somewhat small) gardens at Hinton Ampner [please check the opening times! http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-hintonampnergarden/ ] After your sight-seeing, you can drive on to some place close to Heathrow that you find suitable for getting to the airport the next morning.

I'd choose a hotel in central London from which you can just walk to some toursty places such as Hyde Park, Piccadilly Circus etc. When you leave your cruise ship take a taxi to Southampton Central Station from where SWT trains run to London Waterloo every half hour taking 74 minutes.
