London underground stations?
-
just come back from a trip to london - my third. I really enjoy travelling on the underground, its a novelty for someone whos lives in a small town. whilst i was travelling on the undergound i was looking at the underground and i had a few questions 1) why are some stations marked with white circles and others with just lines? 2) some of the lines (i can thinks of the circle line in particular) just carry on off the map. Do they have other stations outside of london or do they finish at the last station? I know i sound like a silly out of towner, but i just wondered. thanks for any help

Answer:
To answer your questions: 1) The circles indicates that station is an interchange station. You can use that station to transfer to another underground line. 2) The maps you see on the tube trains only show part of the underground system. Typically, they only show the inner London tube stations (Zone 1, 2 and the occasional Zone 3 station if you are familiar with the London zones). However, all trains do show the complete line for the train you are travelling on. So if you are travelling on the Central Line, the map will generally show central London but there will also be a map showing only the complete Central Line. Trains do not typically show the full tube map. Apart from half a dozen stations or so, all the towns and suburbs served are administered by London. They may be regarded as separate towns (such as Harrow or Uxbridge) but are officially administered by London. The general thinking is that if the station is within London Underground Zones 1-5, it is London. Some stations in Zone 6 are London but some are not. All station outside Zone 6 are not London. A full tube map can be obtained from the Transport for London website if you want to see the London zones.

The stations marked by a line on the map are where a station serves only that line, no interchange to another line (or rail) Those with a circle serve 2 or more lines (or 2 branches of one line (such as northern line 2 branches) Those which continue off map, the map is too small perhaps only showing central zones. Some lines do continue out of London, such as to Watford, and Epping. The circle line is contained entirely within central Zone 1

1 Circles are junctions. Where you can easily change lines. 2 You haven't seen the full map. See link

Top question, mate-if there is a circle, it means you can change between lines-I think Kings Cross has 5, including rail. There is a bigger map that shows the whole map that goes to Amersham, Heathrow airport, etc, but they only show the main bit for convenience. If the line is dotted, it means restricted hours i.e. Olympia for events, etc. We only see aboud 2 thirds of the network-there are postal trains and dis-used ones everywhere. I've bored you enough-but next time you come, look on the rails for tube mice!

1, if its a circle its usually a link station or an important station close to a big landmark. 2 the circle line can stop in two places for drivers to change/go off for a pit stop, these are edgeware road and liverpool street, think there is some special line after that where they take the trains for "cleaning" or servicing before they break down again mid journey. Most if not all tubes will have a separate line they can veer off onto so they can get servicing. The circle line btw does not finish off the map, I think your talking about the other lines, most of which dont appear on the smaller central maps, they usually finish on the outskirts of london like the central line goes to the fringes of essex. You can get bigger maps that have the whole thing on, and on tube stations they usually post this big complete map on the walls. Go to www.tfl.co.uk or www.tfl.com (not sure which) and you can ask your heart away to an email who will be thrilled to get back to you with all the specific answers and alot more specific then I am being!

I just wish to correct the totally false answer given by "J" If a Circle Line train was to stop for any length of time at Edgware Road or Liverpool Street it could hold up a following train on the District Line (at Edgware Road) or the Hammersmith and City Line (at Liverpool Street). There is only ONE location where Circle Line trains stop to wait time, and that is Aldgate. That is one of the reasons why Aldgate station has so many platforms. In normal operation, every Circle Line train has three minutes scheduled standing time at Aldgate; but, in practice, due to accumulted late running, this is usually halved..

I think those white circles mean that the stations are connected, but there is a bit of a walk between them. You stay inside the station at all times, no need to swipe out, so it doesn't cost extra. Except for Bow Road and Bow Church, where it shows it is connected but you actually need to leave teh station and walk down the road. The second question - the train still keeps going to a few more stations, they just aren't shown on that map. There are different size maps in the station.
