Trip alone to London, 19 yrs old?
-
I'm 19 and I am planning a 10 day trip to London and Bristol during my spring break, I will be going alone. I want to check out London and Bristol, specifically Bristol University where I will be spending my year abroad starting in Fall 2011. I want to know if hostels are the ideal place to stay when trying to save money. Also I don't eat much, I am pretty picky so I would probably just eat from a supermarket, do they have those in England? Also I was just going to bring a suitcase and a backpack and my short longboard skateboard with me. The point of the trip is to see if I could handle living in England a year. I am independent and figure I will live in hostels and take the bus/train, would this be a lot for one person. I am not too worried about physical threats, I am a third degree black belt in 3 different martial arts so I figure I will be okay. Is there anything that I am forgetting to worry about and does this trip sound worth it and how much money do you estimate this will all cost? I can get a place ticket from LA to London-Heathrow for $560. Is $1200 reasonable?

Answer:
I admire your sensible pre-planning. As stated above Youth Hostels are inexpensive places to stay, but don't expect luxury and they should be booked ahead of time www.yha.org We have supermarkets everywhere and actually they are far better than those in America. For the best quality preprepared food I'd suggest Waitrose and Marks and Spencer. There is also an excellent chain of sandwich/salad bars found everywhere in our larger cities called Pret a Manger. If travelling from London to Bristol Temple Meads Station try and book your rail tickets in advance as you'll find the lowest fares; the trains operate every 30 minutes from London Paddington Station www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk You are right to travel as light as possible. I would allow a budget of 150 dollars per day but if you are frugal you''ll spend a lot less. Don't bring it all in cash. Credit cards are universally accepted here particularly Visa and Mastercard In London where you will find a vast public transport system made up of Underground( Subway) rail;, buses, light rail and tram, do not pay cash fares which are expensive. Use a travelcard, visitor travelcard or Oyster card. See www.tfl.gov.uk While in Bristol take a look at the neighbouring town of Bath. Its beautiful

Forgive me but you Really need to do some Real research on this- London and Bristol are Not some 3rd World country- Yes they have supermarkets/convenience stores/even many usa fast food/pizza outlets are there.- although more in London than Bristol I would guess Have you read up on the Oyster Card for London or transport for Bristol? ATM are available for withdrawls- Best to Contact your Bank and let them know you will be using your ATM card in the UK-otherwise they could Flag your account. And find out What Fees there may be for Currency Exchange for dollars into Pounds as well as a non bank ATM fee for currency convertions: http://www.xe.com/ucc/ Have you checked out the Hostels and what they have and charge? Do you know how to book rail tickets? Are you bringing a Cell phone ( uk call them Mobiles) and will it Work in the UK? Not all will

Hostels are fine. Try the Youth Hostel Association. We have loads of supermarkets. They supply everything including ready-meals. My Canadian relatives were most impressed with the variety. It's unlikely you will have to put your black belt to the test. Most places are safe. You should have enough money if you are careful. Some people use Travellers Cheques. However you can use your Charge Card in UK. Double check with your Charge Card company to make sure they don't flag transactions in ££s as suspicious.

No, don't bother coming we have enough foreigners here already, don't say you like it the city is overpopulated and busy, the cost of living is also very expensive compared to the usa

Hi there I've travelled a bit myself so I know where you're coming from in the sense of your concerns. You'll love the UK so don't worry about that! London, there's plenty of places to stay and a lot that are cheap - when i first moved to London i stayed in a place for £16/night (like $30 I think) in a mixed dorm...that's probably the cheapest you'll get. It was a place called st. christophers inn near london bridge, which is pretty central. I think I booked it through hostels.com (or hostel.com). I imagine you'll be able to get something cheap in bristol through the same site. Although with that in mind you may need to recalculate how much money you need to bring/allocate. Foodwise, there's plenty of great places to eat but if you do prefer supermarkets there are plenty of those too - but in london you'll see more the express versions, which are smaller but still have sandwiches/pasta's etc, or you could go to a 'greggs' or a 'boots' which are normally good value for money - all over the place! and with regards to getting money out, that won't be a problem - you can either just pay with your card everywhere or pop to any bank, they'll be able to tell you how to go about it (travellers cheques may be an option) Safety wise, I appreciate you can handle yourself, and for the most part I'm sure you'll be ok - but be sensible, try and catch the tube in the evenings if you can (they close early) and take a taxi if not in the evenings. either way - have a wonderful time! UK is a lovely place to visit!
