London living expenses.

Living expenses in london?

  • I'm planning to move to london for about a year in the near future, and I want to start getting an idea of how much money i'll need to save to start off. I was wondering if someone could tell me a good area to look for apartments in, and a website where i could find apartments, and give me any advice that would be helpful. it would be greatly appreciated.

Great, IF you can get a Visa to work here. Areas depend on your income, if you can afford a place of your own, if you need to or want to share a place, what type of place you want. Have a look on www. rightmove.co.uk to get an idea of prices and areas. Remember what you see now, will increase in a year from now! You will also need a months rent upfront, and a months worth of rent for a deposit. Many places will not accept you if you do not have a current job and may have to pay 6 months up front for rent. When you start work, you will be paid in arrears and every month, so you will need enough money to support yourself without pay from wages for at least 5 weeks. You also need to pay for council tax, gas, water, electricity, TV licence, Landline and Internet and is totally your responsibility unless your sharing somewhere. Council tax varies but a 2 bed flat is about £120 a month Gas about £30 a month Water rates £30 a month Electricity £30 a month TV Licence £12.12 a month Internet (depends on provider but ours totals £15 a month) Landline (depends on provider but ours is £15 a month) Mobile phones £25 each on contract Food for 2 people comes to £200 a month (home cooked no frozen food, means planned for everyday) Toiletries and laundry/cleaning for 2 people £50 a month A zone 1-3 travel card is around £120 a month. Hope that helps! If you can't get a Visa, then none if the above matters :))

You need to find out whether you qualify for a visa before looking at places to live.

Well it really depends on where you want to live and how big your family is. I will give you an idea of what I pay and you can go from there. First off I live in Kingston which is in greater London zone 6. My husband pays 1,700 pounds for a yearly ticket on the train and that is unlimited on the train, bus, andtube for zones 1 through 6. The closer you get the cheaper it is. I think it i only like 900 and something if you only need zone one and two. We pay about 2,000 a month for a three bedroom house with 1.5 bathrooms and a big kitchen and garden. Groceries for two people we budget 100 pounds a week, but usually spend a little less. For tv, internet and unlimited calls to the US and Canada we pay about 40 pounds. Gas and electrcity we are on a fixed rate of about 100 pounds each and 30 pounds for water. Hope this helps. Kingston is a great family friendly area with lots to do all with in walking distance. I dont work, and the best part about living here is I never need to leave everything is within a 10 minute walk.

= It depends on how long you want it for...if its for anything longer than 2 weeks I would recommend looking on gumtree.com as thats where all the cheap rooms are advertised. You can probably get a cheap room (but not in central London) for around £70 per week. If its a short term stay look for a hostel in the city - I always use hostelbookers - you will pay around £120 for a week of accommodation.
