Being a travel agent can be both frustrating and rewarding. Frustrating when I work for hours, days sometimes weeks and the client books elsewhere or simply disappears without even a thank you so as a self employed person, I don’t get paid for all the work I’ve already done. It is rewarding when I look at a complicated itinerary, put it altogether and it all gels, when the client appreciates what I do and gives me a nice testimonial, when they contact me from resort to tell me they are having a wonderful time and best of all when they refer their friends to me afterwards.

I love every single day being different, learning something new every day even after almost 50 years of doing it. I hate it when the client thinks that all we do is push buttons and it takes 10 minutes to create their dream holiday. This is so rarely true. We are a service industry and providing good service is what we strive for, to make our clients happy and the little touches.

I love the opportunities that I get to travel much more than the average person and also the social aspect, meeting other travel professional, many of whom have become good friends, at events and training sessions in beautiful venues. These are the reasons I believe is why most of us stick with it despite the pitifully low pay.

Apart from actually selling holidays, some of my more complicated tailor made itineraries take weeks of research and weeks of tweaking flight, self-drive (driving distances) and rail combinations, hotel locations, reading reviews. Even seemingly simple requests but with a specific need eg disability, private pool, distance from the airport, distance from an exact venue often mean reading through over 100 descriptions to find one or two that are suitable. Sometimes my eyes are sore from hours of reading hotel descriptions and ploughing through googlemaps. Sometimes it means calling hotels in another continent to check details. These are just some of the things that go into creating a perfect holiday, things that the customers do not see and I don’t always get the jobs so I don’t get paid. I also spend hours, sometimes days on the phone or an emails sorting out issues, often without the customer being aware there ever was an issue. Examples of this include flights cancelled by the airlines, schedule changes that no longer connect, airlines suspending their operations completely, suppliers and bedbanks going bust, transfers not turning up. I also reconfirm transfers, pick ups for day trips etc. Documentation also takes a long time to put together. I write out luggage labels, check the baggage allowance, hand luggage, check in procedure, how to get to the hotel

I go to events to keep up to date with new openings, refurbishments etc and think about which customers would like them. I gather maps and useful destination information and spend time filing them for future use. I spend a couple of hours a day marketing on social media and finding offers. I write blogs to create interest. I also go to business networking usually at least once a week to gain new business and I go out and meet clients or potential clients.

It depends on where in the world you live. I myself am in the USA so for me, I was given plenty of options for training. You don't need a college degree to become a travel agent, so there is no need to go through any college programs unless you prefer to do so. Most travel agents are trained by their niche/speciality. For example, I specialize in Honeymoons and Destination Weddings in the Caribbean and Mexico, so I attend the trainings and certification courses that have to do with that niche market. It doesn't make sense for me to become trained in Romance Travel in Europe unless I am expanding that into my niche as well. By not overloading myself with information and training, it allows me to focus on a specific niche and become an expert in that, which in turn is of greater value to my clients.

My training may consist of an all-day class, trips to visit properties I sell (seeing them for myself so I can answer questions), online courses, and sometimes even attending workshops or seminars at trade shows or independently. It all depends on what training is offered and available. Some of these are offered for free on Travel Agent University. Others you may have to reach out to the suppliers (cruise line, resorts, hotels, etc) directly for their training options and schedules.

Some agents take it a step further and sign up for classes (online) at the The Travel Institute to become a Certified Travel Associate (CTA), Certified Travel Counselor (CTC), or a Certified Travel Industry Executive (CTIE). It all depends on if you think this is worth your time and investment, but it's not necessary in order to be an agent.

Whichever option(s) you choose, it's a smart idea to familiarize yourself as much as possible with whatever you decide to sell. But I'd personally recommend putting more of your money into traveling to the destinations to see them for yourself as opposed to paying money to sit behind a computer and take courses about a destination. Seeing is believing and will give you a much better understanding of the product itself so you can better sell it and answer your client's questions. You can't effectively sell what you don't know.

If you find yourself still needing help understanding how to build or start a travel agency, I'd highly recommend reading books about how to become an agent. Try searching on Amazon.com: become a travel agent. There are plenty (go for the ones with the best ratings, and there are some free ones too). Talk to an established agent or agency owner and ask questions you aren't sure of. Join associations such as NACTA, ASTA, or CCRA Travel Commerce Network which all offer support to agents and are a great tool for agents to use in order to network with other agents and learn from suppliers.

  • you really are not in the mood to search anything, to compare deals in different platforms. You just want to go somewhere within X amount of money and finally to show up at the airport.
  • you hurry or you’re available for trip anytime and here is a travel agent with last minute offer!
  • you want to buy a tour for your parents, and worry about their coordination abroad. Travel agent provides you with a transfer from/to airport, your language speaking guide, program of excursions and etc.

In my opinion otherwise, it’s absolutely worthless to use a travel agent and pay them some extra money for whatever you can find by yourself.

Nowadays there are plenty of platforms where you can book your tickets and staying. Budget friendly. You can make a great plan using a google, YouTube and your fantasy. And this is soooo exciting!

In all these cases above travel agent might help you to find a suitable destination for you personally, to advise you some special places with a stunning view, or some interesting places to go. The travel agent might show you different options so you could have a choice. Also, some good tour operators have agreements with hotels and so the price can be less than if you book from the internet. But usually these hotels are crowded of tourists from your country:)

So now it’s all up to you.

Good luck

1. Cancel Your Car Insurance

You might not even realize it, but your car insurance company is probably overcharging you. In fact, they’re kind of counting on you not noticing. Luckily, this problem is easy to fix.

Don’t waste your time browsing insurance sites for a better deal. A company called Insurify shows you all your options at once — people who do this save up to $996 per year.

If you tell them a bit about yourself and your vehicle, they’ll send you personalized quotes so you can compare them and find the best one for you.

Tired of overpaying for car insurance? It takes just five minutes to compare your options with Insurify and see how much you could save on car insurance.

2. You Can Become a Real Estate Investor for as Little as $10

Take a look at some of the world’s wealthiest people. What do they have in common? Many invest in large private real estate deals. And here’s the thing: There’s no reason you can’t, too — for as little as $10.

An investment called the Fundrise Flagship Fund lets you get started in the world of real estate by giving you access to a low-cost, diversified portfolio of private real estate. The best part? You don’t have to be the landlord. The Flagship Fund does all the heavy lifting.

With an initial investment as low as $10, your money will be invested in the Fund, which already owns more than $1 billion worth of real estate around the country, from apartment complexes to the thriving housing rental market to larger last-mile e-commerce logistics centers.

Want to invest more? Many investors choose to invest $1,000 or more. This is a Fund that can fit any type of investor’s needs. Once invested, you can track your performance from your phone and watch as properties are acquired, improved, and operated. As properties generate cash flow, you could earn money through quarterly dividend payments. And over time, you could earn money off the potential appreciation of the properties.

So if you want to get started in the world of real-estate investing, it takes just a few minutes to sign up and create an account with the Fundrise Flagship Fund.

This is a paid advertisement. Carefully consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses of the Fundrise Real Estate Fund before investing. This and other information can be found in the Fund’s prospectus. Read them carefully before investing.

Need a little extra cash to pay off credit card debt, remodel your house or to buy a big purchase?

We found a company willing to help.

Here’s how it works: If your credit score is at least 620, AmONE can help you borrow up to $50,000 (no collateral needed) with fixed rates starting at 6.40% and terms from 6 to 144 months.

AmONE won’t make you stand in line or call a bank. And if you’re worried you won’t qualify, it’s free to check online. It takes just two minutes, and it could save you thousands of dollars.

Totally worth it.

4. Ask This Company to Get a Big Chunk of Your Debt Forgiven

A company called National Debt Relief could convince your lenders to simply get rid of a big chunk of what you owe. No bankruptcy, no loans — you don’t even need to have good credit.

If you owe at least $10,000 in unsecured debt (credit card debt, personal loans, medical bills, etc.), National Debt Relief’s experts will build you a monthly payment plan. As your payments add up, they negotiate with your creditors to reduce the amount you owe. You then pay off the rest in a lump sum.

On average, you could become debt-free within 24 to 48 months. It takes less than a minute to sign up and see how much debt you could get rid of.

5. Earn $1000/Month by Reviewing Games and Products You Love

Okay, real talk—everything is crazy expensive right now, and let’s be honest, we could all use a little extra cash. But who has time for a second job?

Here’s the good news. You’re already playing games on your phone to kill time, relax, or just zone out. So why not make some extra cash while you’re at it?

With KashKick, you can actually get paid to play. No weird surveys, no endless ads, just real money for playing games you’d probably be playing anyway. Some people are even making over $1,000 a month just doing this!

Oh, and here’s a little pro tip: If you wanna cash out even faster, spending $2 on an in-app purchase to skip levels can help you hit your first $50+ payout way quicker.

Once you’ve got $10, you can cash out instantly through PayPal—no waiting around, just straight-up money in your account.

Seriously, you’re already playing—might as well make some money while you’re at it. Sign up for KashKick and start earning now!

6. Earn Up to $50 this Month By Answering Survey Questions About the News — It’s Anonymous

The news is a heated subject these days. It’s hard not to have an opinion on it.

Good news: A website called YouGov will pay you up to $50 or more this month just to answer survey questions about politics, the economy, and other hot news topics.

Plus, it’s totally anonymous, so no one will judge you for that hot take.

When you take a quick survey (some are less than three minutes), you’ll earn points you can exchange for up to $50 in cash or gift cards to places like Walmart and Amazon. Plus, Penny Hoarder readers will get an extra 500 points for registering and another 1,000 points after completing their first survey.

It takes just a few minutes to sign up and take your first survey, and you’ll receive your points immediately.

7. Get Up to $300 Just for Setting Up Direct Deposit With This Account

If you bank at a traditional brick-and-mortar bank, your money probably isn’t growing much (c’mon, 0.40% is basically nothing).

But there’s good news: With SoFi Checking and Savings (member FDIC), you stand to gain up to a hefty 3.80% APY on savings when you set up a direct deposit or have $5,000 or more in Qualifying Deposits and 0.50% APY on checking balances — savings APY is 10 times more than the national average.

Right now, a direct deposit of at least $1K not only sets you up for higher returns but also brings you closer to earning up to a $300 welcome bonus (terms apply).

You can easily deposit checks via your phone’s camera, transfer funds, and get customer service via chat or phone call. There are no account fees, no monthly fees and no overdraft fees. And your money is FDIC insured (up to $3M of additional FDIC insurance through the SoFi Insured Deposit Program).

It’s quick and easy to open an account with SoFi Checking and Savings (member FDIC) and watch your money grow faster than ever.

It is their responsibility to stock any brochures and promote deals and discounts to the client too. Similarly when booking, it is recommended to show pictures or videos of the hotels etc and deal with flights and so on.

Part of their role is to supply vital information about the vacation. Often, it is the travel agent’s responsibility for sorting out any health issues that might happen too. I used to work in a travel agent. I loved it. I did it for about 2 years pre children. Then I trained as a holiday childcare provider instead.

It was one way to keep up with the industry news and gossip although we also discussed unrelated topics on breaks. In the event of a foreign vacation, travel agents ultimately must ensure that everything is taken care of. It involves talking with people. You also require decent telephone skills just in case.

There is training involved. Keep that in mind when applying.

If you are actively job hunting, I recommend checking out the website of the company to start off with. Take a interest in the industry. Apply for jobs. Stay up to date with industry news too. If you're just looking to book airfare or you know the hotel you want to stay at, travel agents aren't necessary.

It's kind of like getting an oil change; can I do it myself? Sure, but an expert can do it so much faster and with better results. They can also notice things that I don't know to look for and save me trouble down the road.

I rarely use a travel agent, but if my requirements are unusual, they can be useful, but not all agents are equally capable.

There was one I happily gave my business as she could put together flights that were awkward. “I want to fly to Seattle via Tahiti, stay in each for a week, then on to London or Manchester, whichever is cheaper with 2 children.” The tickets weren't the cheapest for adults, but gave a better discount for the children so overall was cheaper. Sadly, she moved away.

She would also say things like “Book next week as (some airline) has cheap specials coming up.” That's something

If your agent does no more than press buttons on a keyboard as you could, why bother with them indeed.

  1. Domestic Travel Growth: India’s domestic tourism market is enormous. As more people explore their own country, the demand for travel agencies to plan, organize, and book trips within India is on the rise. Popular destinations include the Himalayas, Kerala, Rajasthan, and Goa, where travel agents provide personalized itineraries, bookings, and experiences.
  2. Inbound Tourism: India is a global tourism hotspot, attracting millions of international tourists each year. Travel agencies play a crucial role in offering tailored packages, managing visas, and arranging tours for foreign travelers. With destinations like the Taj Mahal, Varanasi, and Rishikesh being highly sought-after, travel agencies have the opportunity to tap into this lucrative inbound tourism market.
  3. Outbound Travel: As Indians increasingly look to travel abroad, the demand for outbound travel services has grown significantly. Travel agencies that specialize in international vacations, providing flight bookings, visa assistance, and customized packages for popular destinations like Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, are flourishing.
  4. Corporate Travel: Business travel is another sector where travel agencies are in high demand. With companies sending employees for conferences, meetings, and work assignments, agencies specializing in corporate travel management, flight bookings, and accommodation arrangements have a significant market.
  5. Online Expansion: The shift to digital platforms has opened new avenues for travel agencies. Many traditional agencies are transitioning to online platforms, offering more convenience and access to a wider customer base. Digital marketing, online bookings, and social media engagement are helping agencies reach tech-savvy travelers.
  6. In conclusion, the travel agency sector in India has vast potential, with opportunities in domestic and international travel, corporate travel, and niche tourism. By leveraging technology and offering personalized services, agencies can tap into this ever-growing market.

Difficult to say accurately how many travel agents are there in India. Travel sector in India is very fragmented Industry. However, there are ways to guesstimate them with a reasonable degree of accuracy.

Travel agents traditional business was/is mainly ticketing (Flight, Hotel and Car/bus rentals) and tiny chunk linked to Holidays (relative to overall portfolio). Now the Travel Agents business is an inverted Pyramid. Travel agents now focus bulk of their attention and energy on Holidays, as ticketing has moved to the end-user realm (DIY).

Coming to estimating the travel agents number in India, the best source is to look for affiliation to trade bodies like IATO (Indian Association of Tour Operators), TAFI and other association. Memberships do overlap here. Approx you will find around ~3000 agent/agency pan-India. These are mainly the organised and registered businesses.

Coming to the fragmented, unorganised, unregistered and conducting business for others bigger agencies as the formal or informal franchise this number could be as high as 5-6 times of the registered formal travel agent/agency business.

Another way to guesstimate the number of travel agents is to derive it from the number of IATA accredited agencies and GDS installation. For every IATA accredited agency, there are at least 10 travel agencies operates without IATA accreditation (In my experience).

3. **Commission from Suppliers:**

- In some cases, travel agents earn a commission from suppliers (airlines, hotels, etc.) for bookings made through them. This commission might cover the agent's services without a separate fee for the traveler.

4. **Percentage of Trip Cost:**

- Some travel agents charge a percentage of the total trip cost. This can be a percentage of the entire package, including flights, accommodations, and activities.

5. **Customization Fee:**

- For complex or highly customized itineraries, travel agents may charge an additional fee to cover the extra time and effort required.

6. **Group Travel Fees:**

- If you're organizing group travel, travel agents may charge additional fees for coordinating multiple bookings.

It's important to discuss and clarify the fee structure with the travel agent before engaging their services. Prices can vary significantly, and transparency about costs ensures that you understand what you're paying for. Additionally, consider comparing fees from multiple travel agents to find one that aligns with your budget and provides the services you need.

Keep in mind that some online travel agencies or platforms may not charge explicit fees to users, as they earn commissions from suppliers. However, the trade-off may be limited personalization compared to working directly with a travel agent.

Hello,

First, you have to be clear with your request. What do you want to have from your travel agent.

When you first started cooperation or when you launched a new destination, do your homework.

It is also ok to inform your agent that you are relaying to his expertise and ask for his guidance. The thing is that, when you submit your request, your travel agent will do his quotation/operation/services based on your request. For instance, if you miss something, the agent may think that you omit it in purpose and don’t need that part of services.

Second, please discuss in detail your requirements and terms of your travel agent.

The beauty of being a travel agent is that you cooperating with other people/business partners all over the world. We need to admit that in a different part of the world, business requirements, etiquette, and standards may vary. Something important to you, may not be required for your travel agent and vice versa. To be on the same side, please take your time to learn about working conditions, requirements and common understanding of both sides.

Third, decide to whom you will trust when it comes to choosing.

In the travel business, it is all about in trust and interpersonal communication. You need to decide to whom you will trust, opinions of other travelers, internet resources or your travel agent. Of course, you need to read and assess all information but if you don’t trust your agent, you better find another one.

Forth, be a fair player. Do your obligations in time and demand the same.

I wish you luck and long lasting fruitful cooperation.

This is totally just opinion but yes. A local agent will already have contacts for hotels, restaurants, and other venues. That agent will also probably have a good set-up for local sightseeing (though investigate due to mark-up). Another thing is that using a local agent brings is the ins and outs of the local language. Even if you speak it, you won’t have the same ability as someone who is local.

Agents can navigate complex itineraries, secure better deals, and offer support during unforeseen events. The last time I used a travel agent was back in the days before easy internet access. My father was terminally ill and I knew that we might have to end our holiday early, and book extra travel. My father died, I explained to the travel agent by phone, what we needed to do, and it was all organised for us, with tickets waiting for us at each point of our journey to the UK and on to Guernsey.

The only advantage I see now is insurance. People who booked Thomas Cook provided flights as individuals have had real problems. A travel agent would have provided insurance, support and help.

2 - You register with a network provider like travelpayout which becomes your one stop shop for having a tie up with various service providers be it Flight , Hotel or Taxi Rental all at one place . Not only that you can also have your own Mobile App which can generate Ad revenue in parallel . Travlepayout even provide framework for both IOS and Android apps , what more you need :)

Now once you have tie ups in place the next thing is to Market Services , for that you may want to use Social network FB Page / Twitter . I’ll suggest FB Page as over a period of time you can build your audience .

Another option is to have your White label website (an example - Travalexa - Cheap flights to best vacation destinations across the world - though it requires little bit of expenditure in booking domain , developing site but you can always get it done on Fiverr . In long term having such site is more effective. My only suggestion don’t make it Too Generic , find your Niche and then go for it .

Once Site FB Page is done (mostly it will be Autopilot as freelancer on Fiverr claims) However my personal experience is you are yet to require some Marketing efforts like Running Ads on FB / Twitter & Google so that audience keep coming to your channel , but again I am not asking you to learn all these as you can pretty much higher good marketer from Fiverr .

3.Infrastructure for operationalizing your travel agency plans.

A wide array of products and services to choose from depending on what you decide to do as a Travel agent.

If you are focussing on tickets, there are sub-agent models to issue Flight tickets without IATA / PCC(Pseudo City code). If you are focussing on Hotels, there too sub-agents model is an established eco-system. My word of caution here, Ticketing as a segment (Flight and Hotel booking) has irreversibly moved into end-user controlled DIY realm. In fact, I would say Ticketing via Agency for retail segment is almost dead.

Holidays segment is vibrant and definitely driving the growth.

Holidays being the composite and services intensive products ( Hotel, flight, ground support and ancillary custom add-ons) relevance of travel agent/agency can only grow in importance vis-a-vis information overload in this space and instant gratification needs of the holiday seekers.

For pure holidays focussed Travel agents and agency would need access to tours and B2B partnerships via B2B Holiday Distribution Platforms like Lizure HDS (Disclaimer: I'm part of Lizur HDS product team)
