I think the big question is why you want to check Facebook and Twitter and what is the frequency (ie once an hour or once every 5 minutes). Since I don’t know the details of your reasons and frequency of checking social media, here are a few broad suggestions:

Reframe social media as a reward after good work:
Figure out how long you’re able to focus in general before you need a break. Let’s say it’s 55 minutes. One way of structuring your time is to focus for 50 minutes and then take a 5 minute break, where you can check social media, stretch etc. That way it's built-in to your day and it’s a

One way of structuring your time is to focus for 50 minutes and then take a 5 minute break, where you can check social media, stretch etc. That way it's built-in to your day and it’s a reward you can look forward to, rather than feeling bad about it. This has been most effective for me. I work in social media so my breaks might look a bit different but it’s helpful to have a reward instead of doing something and feeling bad.

Apps & Add-ons to help you focus

1) If you’re not sure what frequency you’re checking Facebook and Twitter, tools like Rescue Time can help. Sometimes just seeing that you’re spending an hour on something can be enough.

2) There are Firefox Add-ons that will prevent you from checking sites you designate for a period of time. These can help wean you off checking in on a frequent basis.

3) Remove any social media apps from your desktop if they’re distracting you and breaking your focus. Do you have Twitter apps on your computer like Tweetdeck that are constantly pulling your attention to updates? If this is distracting to you, remove them.

I hope this helps! Good luck!

The "context switch" to check on Twitter or Facebook can be expensive. You check your tweet stream or your Newsfeed (or both) and when you return to your "real work," you've forgotten what you were doing, so it takes you a few minutes to re-gather yourself.

It sounds to me like you don't enjoy your job very much, and will use any distraction - FB, Twitter - to avoid doing it. Do you have the same tendency for distraction when you are doing activities you really like or is it just your job? If it's all the time maybe you have ADHD. Bottom line, find yourself a job that is more interesting than FB and Twitter.

try using chrome extensions for twitter and facebook. They have a time limit you can set for refreshing regularly. This way you get cute notifications of people you REALLY want to follow. An an hour would work if you keep the limit of friends and those you follow to a minimum. (Don't check on everyone.Because then your cheating. You haven't really left).

1. Cancel Your Car Insurance

You might not even realize it, but your car insurance company is probably overcharging you. In fact, they’re kind of counting on you not noticing. Luckily, this problem is easy to fix.

Don’t waste your time browsing insurance sites for a better deal. A company called Insurify shows you all your options at once — people who do this save up to $996 per year.

If you tell them a bit about yourself and your vehicle, they’ll send you personalized quotes so you can compare them and find the best one for you.

Tired of overpaying for car insurance? It takes just five minutes to compare your options with Insurify and see how much you could save on car insurance.

2. Ask This Company to Get a Big Chunk of Your Debt Forgiven

A company called National Debt Relief could convince your lenders to simply get rid of a big chunk of what you owe. No bankruptcy, no loans — you don’t even need to have good credit.

If you owe at least $10,000 in unsecured debt (credit card debt, personal loans, medical bills, etc.), National Debt Relief’s experts will build you a monthly payment plan. As your payments add up, they negotiate with your creditors to reduce the amount you owe. You then pay off the rest in a lump sum.

On average, you could become debt-free within 24 to 48 months. It takes less than a minute to sign up and see how much debt you could get rid of.

3. You Can Become a Real Estate Investor for as Little as $10

Take a look at some of the world’s wealthiest people. What do they have in common? Many invest in large private real estate deals. And here’s the thing: There’s no reason you can’t, too — for as little as $10.

An investment called the Fundrise Flagship Fund lets you get started in the world of real estate by giving you access to a low-cost, diversified portfolio of private real estate. The best part? You don’t have to be the landlord. The Flagship Fund does all the heavy lifting.

With an initial investment as low as $10, your money will be invested in the Fund, which already owns more than $1 billion worth of real estate around the country, from apartment complexes to the thriving housing rental market to larger last-mile e-commerce logistics centers.

Want to invest more? Many investors choose to invest $1,000 or more. This is a Fund that can fit any type of investor’s needs. Once invested, you can track your performance from your phone and watch as properties are acquired, improved, and operated. As properties generate cash flow, you could earn money through quarterly dividend payments. And over time, you could earn money off the potential appreciation of the properties.

So if you want to get started in the world of real-estate investing, it takes just a few minutes to sign up and create an account with the Fundrise Flagship Fund.

This is a paid advertisement. Carefully consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses of the Fundrise Real Estate Fund before investing. This and other information can be found in the Fund’s prospectus. Read them carefully before investing.

4. Earn Up to $50 this Month By Answering Survey Questions About the News — It’s Anonymous

The news is a heated subject these days. It’s hard not to have an opinion on it.

Good news: A website called YouGov will pay you up to $50 or more this month just to answer survey questions about politics, the economy, and other hot news topics.

Plus, it’s totally anonymous, so no one will judge you for that hot take.

When you take a quick survey (some are less than three minutes), you’ll earn points you can exchange for up to $50 in cash or gift cards to places like Walmart and Amazon. Plus, Penny Hoarder readers will get an extra 500 points for registering and another 1,000 points after completing their first survey.

It takes just a few minutes to sign up and take your first survey, and you’ll receive your points immediately.

5. Get Up to $300 Just for Setting Up Direct Deposit With This Account

If you bank at a traditional brick-and-mortar bank, your money probably isn’t growing much (c’mon, 0.40% is basically nothing).

But there’s good news: With SoFi Checking and Savings (member FDIC), you stand to gain up to a hefty 3.80% APY on savings when you set up a direct deposit or have $5,000 or more in Qualifying Deposits and 0.50% APY on checking balances — savings APY is 10 times more than the national average.

Right now, a direct deposit of at least $1K not only sets you up for higher returns but also brings you closer to earning up to a $300 welcome bonus (terms apply).

You can easily deposit checks via your phone’s camera, transfer funds, and get customer service via chat or phone call. There are no account fees, no monthly fees and no overdraft fees. And your money is FDIC insured (up to $3M of additional FDIC insurance through the SoFi Insured Deposit Program).

It’s quick and easy to open an account with SoFi Checking and Savings (member FDIC) and watch your money grow faster than ever.

5. Stop Paying Your Credit Card Company

If you have credit card debt, you know. The anxiety, the interest rates, the fear you’re never going to escape… but a website called AmONE wants to help.

If you owe your credit card companies $100,000 or less, AmONE will match you with a low-interest loan you can use to pay off every single one of your balances.

The benefit? You’ll be left with one bill to pay each month. And because personal loans have lower interest rates (AmONE rates start at 6.40% APR), you’ll get out of debt that much faster.

It takes less than a minute and just 10 questions to see what loans you qualify for.

6. Lock In Affordable Term Life Insurance in Minutes.

Let’s be honest—life insurance probably isn’t on your list of fun things to research. But locking in a policy now could mean huge peace of mind for your family down the road. And getting covered is actually a lot easier than you might think.

With Best Money’s term life insurance marketplace, you can compare top-rated policies in minutes and find coverage that works for you. No long phone calls. No confusing paperwork. Just straightforward quotes, starting at just $7 a month, from trusted providers so you can make an informed decision.

The best part? You’re in control. Answer a few quick questions, see your options, get coverage up to $3 million, and choose the coverage that fits your life and budget—on your terms.

You already protect your car, your home, even your phone. Why not make sure your family’s financial future is covered, too? Compare term life insurance rates with Best Money today and find a policy that fits.

  • Form the habit of prioritizing your work as you start your day
  • Form a timetable for each work item you have to complete in a day
  • Once you will see that you are able to complete your deliverable on time without doing facebook, you will feel good
  • Even after this if you are feeling the urge, take deep breath, this will calm your urge for checking facebook or any time waste activity

I’ve used this technique for staying away from Online media consumption during my work hours.

I won’t say that I’ve always succeeded but when I’ve done I’ve felt very good. :)

I am a Senior health actuarial analyst close to earning my ASA with the Society of Actuaries. But actuaries have a wide range of industries to choose from. We work across health and wellness, property and casualty, finance, and more, informing decisions that businesses, governments, and individuals may make about their future and the future of the world.

Take this for example: when you need to consider healthcare and review a variety of health insurance premiums, remember that an actuary helped to create those packages.

That’s one aspect of what an actuary does. We inform decisions through data and calculated risk factors. The reason that you’re able to pick and choose how much you can pay and how much coverage you want is because an actuary put the work in so you can have options.

Sometimes you can’t just shut it off.

Typically, I study and do almost everything while on my laptop - that means I’m more vulnerable at any instant. How do I deal with it?

Here are few things I did, and you can do as well.
(
All of the following tips come from my personal experience)

A) Web Browser Extensions: Blacklist Certain Sites

I use a chrome extension called “SELF CONTROL” which you can find it on Chrome Store.

You choose what websites you do NOT want to be in your face while you do your thing. Block Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, or whatever.

So whenever your habit of checking for notifications kicks in, it’ll get slapped with a new tab that puts a “stay focused” sign on your active tab (window).

For me, this induces guilt and fear of disappointing yourself later.

Nobody enjoys that moment when one feel like shit because he/she wasted his/her energy on the stuff that don’t accomplish or push forward.

B) Use Different Browsers

Might sound unusual, but I use 3 browsers. Currently, I’m using Vivaldi browser while writing this answer. Why do I do this?

Because I have fully customized it to be work friendly.

My bookmarks are different; they’re work related: engineering articles, productivity articles, latest class material.. etc

Not only the bookmarks, but also the whole look and feel of it. It feels like in a workstation.

However, my Google Chrome web browser has my Youtube account signed in to watch my favorite youtubers and content that I choose to see if and only if I’m using that browser.

Not gonna lie, it kinda puts me on a short leash.

If I ever feel burnt out or in need for entertainment - I switch browsers, do what I have to do, then continue where I left off.

C) Adjust The Settings

Even if you’re working on a social media platform (say a digital marketer), you STILL can do few adjustment to eliminate or reduce the notification rings exponentially.

I have 200+ friends on Facebook, but I do not follow everyone.
I follow only the top 20 because they are the most influential people in my life. When I come across an accomplishment of theirs, it gives me motivation and a shock that stings me to get back to work on
my accomplishments.

For Facebook, for example:

  • Turn off notifications for posts.
  • Click “appear offline” on the chat panel to avoid any chat window popping.
  • Click “ignore messages” to the people you know are full of words and like to chat even in the most critical moments - you’ll get back to them later.
  • If anything unexpected happens - be honest about it. Tell people who message you that you are busy at the moment.

D) Take A Walk

Constantly checking your notifications indicates that you’re looking for any kind of content to occupy yourself with. Even while procrastinating you’d scroll through Facebook feeds or check for notifications pretty frequently to digest anything new because you’re bored (maybe).

Go take a walk - and if you’re unmotivated to do so, trust me, it doesn’t take that much time you literally need 5 minutes.

While walking you’ll start to think about what you need to achieve after you go home and clear your state of mind.

Fun fact: small walks in the nature and being exposed to fresh air increase brain activity, so that should give you more thinking-fuel.

E) Ignore The Numbers

I kinda have a feeling that Facebook (again, it’s the only area of my expertise here) throws whatever there is out there for the sake of delivering a notification.

Literally.

It’s like a desperate person calling you over and over for attention, and It’s probably the stupidest shit ever.

This is my Facebook account at the moment. 28 notifications.
I just went through them for the sake of proving my point.

12 notifications about: newcomers to your page
01 notification about:
“______” was live
… and the rest is completely irrelevant and useless.
(I was kinda hoping for an update on the coming boot camp I registered in..)

Let the notifications pile up. Fuck it, there’s nothing worthy.

And if you truly need to check your notifications for an important reason, do so every 1 hour so that you can do more with your time.

Thanks for reading if you got this far.
Edits are welcome :)

I used to check Facebook once in the morning and then once at night. I found that I was not missing anything. It took me maximum 15 minutes to go through the whole day's updates. And I have never said "Oh I wish I could have seen this during the day".

We sleep 6-7-8 hours every night. What do you miss on Facebook during that time? Nothing actually. It is our eagerness, the unnecessary need to be up to date with every Facebook update the moment it arrives in our feed.

I use Facebook around 3-4 times everyday and I am very happy about it. I don't owe my life to Facebook and I am not a slave anymore. I have more time to do things that actually matter. I spend more time with my family. I spend more time learning new technologies. I have been reading a lot of books and I am so thankful that I am not a Facebook addict anymore.

Moderation is the key.

If it is affecting you this badly, then i’d suggest you delete the app, and get out and go do stuff you enjoy. Real life is out there, and you can go and participate without the use of your phone. Seriously, go and observe others, attached to their phones, like some weird umbilical cord, that has them hooked into the matrix or something. People cannot just go out and eat anymore, oh no, they have to take an Instagram pic of their dinner, and post it immediately. And then feel bad it did not get instant likes and three new followers. Just enjoy your dinner. Like in the olden days!

Addressing external stimuli or tools in this case will not help eradicate your nature for addiction. We need to address the impulse.

What is impulse

A sudden desire to do something without thinking about the results

Impulse stems from being in unconcious state of doing a particlular activity. When I mean unconcious I mean we are not aware about 99 percent of our daily activities that we do some are habitual while majority of them are unconscious.

How do you invoke a conscious living

Consciousness is about awareness: being alert to details, being in the moment, and most of all, simply being awake! Like everything else, it is something that is learned. It’s a habit we get into.

There are many different ways to awaken consciousness.

1. Fear.

One of the main reasons why we are able to live unconsciously is because the element of fear has mostly been eliminated from our day to day existences.

How comfortable is your life exactly?

If there’s nothing that challenges you, nothing that causes even the slightest bit of fear or trepidation, you are probably living underneath the surface of your life.

Challenge yourself. Do something out of the box. Take up white water rafting or mountain climbing. Sports are great for being in the moment, and the fear of losing the game is what drives you forward.

2. Travel.

Traveling changes your basic viewing process. It rips you out of your head and your agenda and forces you to just focus on the world around you again.

After a while your expectations slowly drop away. Things expand. You’re not the center of the universe anymore. You become part of the world instead of a little bubble floating along in it.

Travel requires you to be a little bit vulnerable. You have to face numerous fears about being in a new place, not knowing where to go or what will happen next. You have to put yourself out there and trust that everything will be OK.

3. Meditation.

This is the most well-known way to cleanse and awaken the mind, and yet many people shy away from it. Meditation doesn’t have to happen alone in a quiet room. In every act that you undertake if you are involved 100 percent you eventually get into state of meditation. It helps to focus better and improves concentration. As simple as juggling a ball, concenterate on the ball and the force you apply to toss it up. Believe me it works.

Being conscious and aware is about opening your eyes to the world again, looking outside of yourself instead of always leaning into your own interior world. Step out of your bubble of existence and really take a good hard look at the world around you again.

Hope this helps😊

Thank you for giving me the opportunity for A2A

4. It is bad manner not to talk to people, with when you are dining with, but if you eat alone, focus on chewing. Seriously. More salivation is good for your stomach and digestion also.

5.Control yourself not to touch phone, if kept on the table, i know it's not easy, but should try it.

6.Think, what are you looking in social media. Talking with friends? Why you not meet them in real? News? Choose one feed and read 2–3 article per day.

7.You wont absorb more info. Cool/funny pics? Come on, are you 10 yrs old? How much time do you to plan spend on scrolling 9GAG? For me, it’s 30 mn ...

Years ago, I used to read the newspaper with my morning coffee. But I'm a slow reader, and many stories interested me, and it could take me two hours to read the paper. So I stopped getting the paper.

My emails are not set on automatic. They wait until I go look at them, and if that means three days, it means three days. If I miss a new client, I must not have had time for one, because I was spending three days doing this client's work.

When I teach a class, I make all the students turn their phones off -- not on vibrate, but off -- before I will begin my lecture. If I see a student distracted by a phone, I take it away until the lecture is over. And I explain to them that's it's a reflex; if one person looks at a cell phone, everyone in the class wants to check messages. So if they can't stop being addicted to the phone, they have to leave it with mine -- outside the classroom. Because when I'm lecturing, nothing is more important than the lecture. And if you're in my class, nothing is more important for you, either.

Try turning the phone completely off for an hour and pick up a book to read, but also have notepaper and pen nearby (nothing electronic!) Every time you can't concentrate on your book, write down the words in your head. Are you afraid of missing a girlfriend, a movie star, the stock market?

Try having a physical act to do. A month ago I moved, but I had made a commitment to myself to be a top writer on Quora to build a professional reputation. I wake up in the morning and start typing before I make my morning coffee. And sometime during the day, I look around at the unpacking left to do and pick one more box to empty, or one more shelf to assemble. Then I can concentrate on Quora again.

I would probably say by the same way you would manage another addiction.

But I think that when it comes to social media, it’s more of a laziness problem.

It’s a problem of not prioritizing your day to an extent that social media overclouds it.

I think most of the problem has to do with not being disciplined, eating health, exercising, and having a full-time venture that you like doing.

People are good at faking it. They also facetune their selfies, take photoshop to an extreme, and most stage their photos. It was ruining my self esteem and it made me feel bad about myself.

I don’t have a Twitter. Never have and never will. I don’t understand why people like Twitter so much. I guess I will only have a Twitter if I have fans. I thought celebrities use Twitter as a way to keep in touch with their fans.

Snapchat bored me to death. I never actually used the Stories section nor do I even click on it. That’s how little I care about it. The flower crown filter and the dog filter were cute at first, but I got tired of it. That’s why I deleted my Snapchat.

The only social media I have are Facebook, Tumblr, and Youtube. I can survive without Tumblr, though. I can go on weeks and months without logging in on Tumblr.

I have two Facebook account: one for my real life friends and family and one for my online friends. I deactivated my main account and it helped me a lot. I no longer feel insecure about myself. I no longer have to compare myself to other people.

Youtube is not really a social media, but it is a video sharing website where you can watch videos.

How do I stop the habit of constantly checking notifications on social media?

You probably won’t so long as your most important life contacts are on social media. When and if your life shifts—or you shift your life—so that your most important responsibilities and contacts are outside social media, I think you will lose the habit.

Social networking can be an effective work tool which improves productivity if used correctly. Many of our projects use Facebook Groups (to discuss projects and post news) and sometimes YouTube (to share UI experiences). Other projects benefit from chat/messaging and other social tools.

Delete it, and do not look back for at least several weeks. Getting addicted to social media takes a toll on your outside relationships and makes it a hindrance. Get rid of it. If that does not work that try to take a break from your phone for a little bit.

I was a heavy Twitter user for a while when I was at Intel. It was even part of my job. I never considered it unhealthy and only quit because it no longer was considered relevant to my job. If you find yourself acting addicted, that could be a problem, but I find that to be overrated as a threat.

You can try and unfollow them if you’re trying to get over someone, maybe just hide their profile or mute them so you don’t get notifications that they posted. willpower is key. focus on better things instead of seeing whether they were active 3 minutes ago.

Change your password to some random characters which you're sure you can't reproduce later. And logout from all devices.

Now since you don't remember the password, you'll have to reset it. That involves restoration of the account through mail or a text message from phone.

There will be a compelling urge. But if you can resist it for a week, it'll automatically die off. It worked for me. Hope it does for you too. :)

Any right-minded organisation would embrace the use of any techniques that can equip staff to be aware of what is going on in and around them. In a policy context, I find Twitter is an invaluable way of getting access to new information quickly.

I can see the argument that things like Twitter can be a distraction - but if an employee is adequately motivated to do their job then I think they should be allowed the space to decide for themselves how to complete tasks. Banning social media is not a way to motivate staff to not waste their time - if not happy they will just find other ways to waste time.

Most people I've ever met need some help thinking about how to prioritise their workloads and be more productive and, yes, I'm sure social media sites make this even more of an issue, but why not invest in general advice around productivity and planning rather than wasting time with contracts against private internet usage.

There is perhaps a marketing/communications question as to whether you want staff interacting on Twitter as themselves all day or on behalf of the company or both.

Its just hiding behind society. If you see others do it and pretend its acceptable then you adopt the same.

As long as you surround yourself with people who use it you will justify that the FOMO is real and a normal thing.

But take away the social aspect and all you have is the bad.

Trust there are other ways to be social without giving your life away freely to an algorithm that steals from you.

I think the answer to this would be “How do I stop watching Porn?” or “How can I stop smoking?”

All these questions come in the same category And the answer to this would be no you can’t but you can stop limiting yourself towards all these. You can start by limiting youself for 3days then extend it to one week then further extend it to two week and then one month. Soon this will become so much less important to you that you would sometime forget about all this.

Remember to keep rewarding yourself after every successful task.

If i am really obsessive about a person on social media to a point that I really get bothered, i prefer unfollowing the person or blocking them. Or maybe removing or deactivating my own account for a short while can do.
