Yes, to an extent. You can change your name to match your legal name (if it changes via change-of-name, or marriage, or something), or to reflect the nickname you’re most known by. For example, if I usually went by Dom or Nick instead of Dominic. You definitely can’t use things like “hornydude2203” or something - unless you plan to insist that’s the nickname you actually commonly go by.

On the other hand, I have found Facebook to be quite lenient nowadays, as I have a friend who regularly changes their name (to reflect various nicknames).

It used to be that they would require proof that you had legally changed your name - or in the case of nicknames, they may require your friends/family to vouch for you. But, I haven’t heard of that being done in quite a while.

Either way, to err on the safe side, go read their TOS to see what exactly the requirements and limitations are. Honestly, I don’t know why you didn’t just do that before asking here. If you want to know what is and isn’t allowed on facebook or any other social media site, read the TOS. You were supposed to anyway when you signed up. Like, you literally have to agree to it, so you may as well read it too. They also have FAQ’s you can read that clarify things like this as well. So, really, those should be your first source.

Did you actually complete the update with a save or submit button? I sometimes forget that step because the button is not always in view. Some updates do not have a submit button.

I think the main reason for profile page setting not resulting in a view update is skipping of the save or submit button.

The risk depends on what you plan on doing to generate traffic to the “new” page. We do struggle with this since Facebook does allow duplicate Page names and it makes it hard for your audience to find you with the search window inside Facebook!

Also, there are Page name restrictions which appear very arbitrary! For examples, we were not allowed to use the word “official” in a page name in an attempt to distinguish the new Page from the previous one’s created by the employee’s of the SAME company!

You might want to explore a MERG the Pages after you create the new one. But Merge itself is not a trivial process and it could take weeks or longer.

Bottom line is that with Facebook Page, there is a decent amount of wild-wild West going on and it’s un-predictable and less corporate since it’s tied to people’s personal login! In fact, despite repeated attempts to have old page names removed, Facebook Page team has ignored these requests. In some cases, we even had the owners of these duplicate pates submit a request to Facebook to have the Page deleted (they no longer had access to the Page); but still the requests for page delete are ignored.

So, deleting the old page names will be a struggle too and that’s why I would advise caution and research before you start creating pages.

Since we are advertising for these newly created Pages, the audience would find them through these ads. But it’s less than ideal since the one’s with duplicate name still exist and it’s impossible to tell how many people will use the Search Window of Facebook and give up after seeing 3 or 4 pages with the SAME name.

My final recommendation is for you to open a ticket with Advertising Support and see what they recommend for your specific case. SMB ad support is based in Austin, TX (central time zone).
