Plus with rates above 5.00%, the interest you can earn compared to most banks really adds up.

Here is a list of the top savings accounts available today. Deposit $5 before moving on because this is one of the biggest mistakes and easiest ones to fix.

Overpaying on car insurance

You’ve heard it a million times before, but the average American family still overspends by $417/year on car insurance.

If you’ve been with the same insurer for years, chances are you are one of them.

Pull up Coverage.com, a free site that will compare prices for you, answer the questions on the page, and it will show you how much you could be saving.

That’s it. You’ll likely be saving a bunch of money. Here’s a link to give it a try.

Consistently being in debt

If you’ve got $10K+ in debt (credit cards…medical bills…anything really) you could use a debt relief program and potentially reduce by over 20%.

Here’s how to see if you qualify:

Head over to this Debt Relief comparison website here, then simply answer the questions to see if you qualify.

It’s as simple as that. You’ll likely end up paying less than you owed before and you could be debt free in as little as 2 years.

Missing out on free money to invest

It’s no secret that millionaires love investing, but for the rest of us, it can seem out of reach.

Times have changed. There are a number of investing platforms that will give you a bonus to open an account and get started. All you have to do is open the account and invest at least $25, and you could get up to $1000 in bonus.

Pretty sweet deal right? Here is a link to some of the best options.

Having bad credit

A low credit score can come back to bite you in so many ways in the future.

From that next rental application to getting approved for any type of loan or credit card, if you have a bad history with credit, the good news is you can fix it.

Head over to BankRate.com and answer a few questions to see if you qualify. It only takes a few minutes and could save you from a major upset down the line.

How to get started

Hope this helps! Here are the links to get started:

Have a separate savings account
Stop overpaying for car insurance
Finally get out of debt
Start investing with a free bonus
Fix your credit

Update (2015-03-21): Since writing this, I am more interested in VR and AR. I can see a killer app, but not in the traditional sense. The killer app for VR and AR are exploration of inner spaces, consciousness, and consensus "reality". It is very simple: the experiences you can get with VR and AR will prepare people for therapies based upon psychedelics. People are already hitting the "VR-induced existential crisis", and that was with crappy resolutions and crappy content. It won't even shift people's experience of reality anywhere near meditation practice or psychedelics... but for the mainstream people who won't go anywhere near meditation or psychedelics, it shifts your experience of what you think is "real" just enough that it has freaked people out.

For example, there are VR content that lets you walk through a simulation of a warzone ... and develop empathy for the fallout of war. It's accessible for people who have never been there, have never considered the horrors of war. It might lead people to shifting their opinions on nationalism, patriotism, and fanaticism.

That is the killer app.

It just won't be obvious until sufficient number of people has a personal VR or AR gear because people are looking for a way to monetize this, and the kind of shifts this technology enables brings someone beyond the box called "monetization".

Older answer:

Random stuff off the top of my head -- I have no idea if any of these are "killer apps". Probably because it's not really my itch to scratch:

  1. Real-time universal translator. (Microsoft Translates English To Mandarin Speech In Real Time (VIDEO))
  2. Sensory prosthetics for the blind, deaf, mute, etc.
  3. Social mediations, enhancements, networking, etc. Socializing is about advertising (signaling) and connecting. AR will let people signal mutual interests (business, romance, adventure). Kinda like a Facebook/Tweet overlay. (For a preview of what it might be like: observe people around you on how they use social networks on their smartphone).
  4. Skillsofts. The driving one in User is an example. Another would be an AR overlay showing you how to cook a gourmet meal or select ingredients. Industrial applications might include looking at large, specialized machineries and "seeing into" it for troubleshooting. Engine maintenance for jet planes and ships. Warehousing / inventory control applications. Troubleshooting robotics. Similar applications for research and lab equipment (for example, AR tags showing which test tubes belong to where when conducting experiments). AR diagnostic displays for doctors, surgeons, and nurses. Etc. etc.
  5. Augmented Retail. Big-box retail shops are now transitioning to providing experiences. If you just wanted to find the best product, you'd search Google and order off of Amazon. If you wanted to go experience things, you'd show up at a JC Penny's or Ikea. You wear your glasses, contacts, or whatever.
  6. Entertainment. Trent Reznor had said that he had maxed out the envelop of current technologies, but he can probably be persuaded to perform again if everyone in the audience wore a pair of Google Glasses. I can also see tourist shops that lets a group of people experience some exotic place together. Or maybe that'd work better in South Korea, where people will camp out at shops playing MMOs.
  7. I don't have the YouTube link for this anymore: many people are shifting from owning things to having access to things. Netflix instead of a video library. iTunes instead of a CD collection. AR let you redecorate your home without actually buying anything tangible.
  8. Security. Security personnels (like TSR employees) wearing AR glasses and picking out metallic objects on people. And other more sinister applications. (And fun consequences, like setting off people's pacemakers or muscle/nerve prosthetics).

Some good sources for this stuff is reading lots of science fiction and cyberpunk. Neal Stephenson, Bruce Sterling, Peter F. Hamilton, Daniel Suarez comes to mind, to name a few. Shadowrun source books are also interesting inspirations. Use your imagination. That's what AR means at its core.

VIRTUAL REALITY:

In “virtual reality” you wear some kind of goggles that shut out your view of the real world - and instead display some kind of 3D graphics world. As you move your head around there are sensors in the goggles that the software uses to draw the 3D scene from your perspective as you look around within it. The software can display a subtly different picture to each of your eyes - which (mostly) fools you in to seeing the “virtual” world in three dimensions.

AUGMENTED REALITY:

In “augmented reality”, it’s very similar - but the goggles aren’t opaque. You can still see the real world. The computer graphics are overlaid as an opaque or semi-opaque layer on top of the real world.

So, you could imagine a game, where somewhere in the city there is a hidden treasure. Maybe there are clues to where it is.

You walk around in the real world - everything seems normal - until you find a clue…maybe in the form of a big red arrow seemingly painted onto an office building or something. The office building is real - but the big red arrow is computer graphics.

Not all of augmented reality is done with goggles - sometimes it’s done on the cheap with just a cellphone.

In that case, the designer takes the image from the phone’s camera and displays it at roughly the right size so that it almost looks as if you’re looking at the real world THROUGH the phone’s display. As you move the phone around - it’s like the display has turned into a sheet of clear glass.

Now they can draw graphics over the real world video stream - and it’ll be like there are these invisible things in the world that you can only see by looking through this magic piece of glass.

APPLICATIONS:

Augmented realiity is used in some games - the “Pokemon Go” game being the classic example where Pokemon characters were “hidden” in various real-world locations - and you could go there and find them and see them through the magic “window” of your cellphone.

The system is networked so two or more players can see the same character in the same place - but from different directions.

But there are also serious applications - I’ve seen systems where some person is inspecting an airplane engine - and a computer is showing them which specific places in the engine need to be checked.

So the service tech is wearing the goggles - they can see the real world engine right in front of them - but the computer is overlaying an arrow showing where some voltage should be measured - maybe also displaying the maximum and minumum...

Augmented Reality is one of the fastest growing technologies in the world today. It enables you to superimpose a computer-generated image on a user's view of the real world, thus providing a composite view. AR has been incorporated in a number of successful apps. There are a number of tools have come up with regard to developing AR software.

Vuforia

Vuforia is one of the most popular platforms in the realm of Augmented Reality. The library enables recognition of different kinds of visual objects (a box , cylinder, plane), text and environments recognition, VuMark (a combination of picture and QR-code). Using Vuforia Object Scanner, you can scan and create the object. The recognition process can be implemented using the database (local or cloud storage). The best thing about the app is that it's free and it is simple to use and powerful.

EasyAR

EasyAR is a free and easy to use alternative to Vuforia. Available on Android, iOS, UWP, Windows, Mac and Unity Editor, the latest version of EasyAR(13.1) supports image recognition only. Version 2.0 consists of the following features. Namely;

1. 3D Object Recognition

2. Environment perception

3. Cloud Recognition

4. Smart Glass Solution

5. App Cloud Packaging

Unlike Vuforia, the EasyAR app is also free. To begin your work with EasyAR, you only need to register the account and to generate the plugin’s key of your Bundle ID.

Maxst

Maxt offers different tools for image and environment recognition. The generation of a database is online via Tracking Manager. Maxt enables you to scan 3D objects in the environment. In Unity Editor, Maxt works with a 32-bit version.

The best thing about this library is that it is easy to use and in integration. Further, it is free.

Xzimg

Xzimg provides three products to work with AR-based applications. Namely;

1. They are Augmented Face recognizes and tracks faces with Unity

2. Augmented Vision recognizes and tracks planar images with Unity

3. Magic Face is for face replacement and make-up applications

Xzimg allows the recognition of simple images and black & white markers. Also, Generation of the database is local in the Unity Editor.

NyARToolkit

Currently, on Android and iOS, the NyARToolkit is used for identification and tracking images. It is a simplified version of ARToolKit and uses the same web tool for generating the database as ARToolKit. Although it is free to integrate, the drawback of this library is that it is not available in English.

1. Cancel Your Car Insurance

You might not even realize it, but your car insurance company is probably overcharging you. In fact, they’re kind of counting on you not noticing. Luckily, this problem is easy to fix.

Don’t waste your time browsing insurance sites for a better deal. A company called Insurify shows you all your options at once — people who do this save up to $996 per year.

If you tell them a bit about yourself and your vehicle, they’ll send you personalized quotes so you can compare them and find the best one for you.

Tired of overpaying for car insurance? It takes just five minutes to compare your options with Insurify and see how much you could save on car insurance.

2. Ask This Company to Get a Big Chunk of Your Debt Forgiven

A company called National Debt Relief could convince your lenders to simply get rid of a big chunk of what you owe. No bankruptcy, no loans — you don’t even need to have good credit.

If you owe at least $10,000 in unsecured debt (credit card debt, personal loans, medical bills, etc.), National Debt Relief’s experts will build you a monthly payment plan. As your payments add up, they negotiate with your creditors to reduce the amount you owe. You then pay off the rest in a lump sum.

On average, you could become debt-free within 24 to 48 months. It takes less than a minute to sign up and see how much debt you could get rid of.

3. You Can Become a Real Estate Investor for as Little as $10

Take a look at some of the world’s wealthiest people. What do they have in common? Many invest in large private real estate deals. And here’s the thing: There’s no reason you can’t, too — for as little as $10.

An investment called the Fundrise Flagship Fund lets you get started in the world of real estate by giving you access to a low-cost, diversified portfolio of private real estate. The best part? You don’t have to be the landlord. The Flagship Fund does all the heavy lifting.

With an initial investment as low as $10, your money will be invested in the Fund, which already owns more than $1 billion worth of real estate around the country, from apartment complexes to the thriving housing rental market to larger last-mile e-commerce logistics centers.

Want to invest more? Many investors choose to invest $1,000 or more. This is a Fund that can fit any type of investor’s needs. Once invested, you can track your performance from your phone and watch as properties are acquired, improved, and operated. As properties generate cash flow, you could earn money through quarterly dividend payments. And over time, you could earn money off the potential appreciation of the properties.

So if you want to get started in the world of real-estate investing, it takes just a few minutes to sign up and create an account with the Fundrise Flagship Fund.

This is a paid advertisement. Carefully consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses of the Fundrise Real Estate Fund before investing. This and other information can be found in the Fund’s prospectus. Read them carefully before investing.

4. Earn Up to $50 this Month By Answering Survey Questions About the News — It’s Anonymous

The news is a heated subject these days. It’s hard not to have an opinion on it.

Good news: A website called YouGov will pay you up to $50 or more this month just to answer survey questions about politics, the economy, and other hot news topics.

Plus, it’s totally anonymous, so no one will judge you for that hot take.

When you take a quick survey (some are less than three minutes), you’ll earn points you can exchange for up to $50 in cash or gift cards to places like Walmart and Amazon. Plus, Penny Hoarder readers will get an extra 500 points for registering and another 1,000 points after completing their first survey.

It takes just a few minutes to sign up and take your first survey, and you’ll receive your points immediately.

5. Get Up to $300 Just for Setting Up Direct Deposit With This Account

If you bank at a traditional brick-and-mortar bank, your money probably isn’t growing much (c’mon, 0.40% is basically nothing).

But there’s good news: With SoFi Checking and Savings (member FDIC), you stand to gain up to a hefty 3.80% APY on savings when you set up a direct deposit or have $5,000 or more in Qualifying Deposits and 0.50% APY on checking balances — savings APY is 10 times more than the national average.

Right now, a direct deposit of at least $1K not only sets you up for higher returns but also brings you closer to earning up to a $300 welcome bonus (terms apply).

You can easily deposit checks via your phone’s camera, transfer funds, and get customer service via chat or phone call. There are no account fees, no monthly fees and no overdraft fees. And your money is FDIC insured (up to $3M of additional FDIC insurance through the SoFi Insured Deposit Program).

It’s quick and easy to open an account with SoFi Checking and Savings (member FDIC) and watch your money grow faster than ever.

5. Stop Paying Your Credit Card Company

If you have credit card debt, you know. The anxiety, the interest rates, the fear you’re never going to escape… but a website called AmONE wants to help.

If you owe your credit card companies $100,000 or less, AmONE will match you with a low-interest loan you can use to pay off every single one of your balances.

The benefit? You’ll be left with one bill to pay each month. And because personal loans have lower interest rates (AmONE rates start at 6.40% APR), you’ll get out of debt that much faster.

It takes less than a minute and just 10 questions to see what loans you qualify for.

6. Lock In Affordable Term Life Insurance in Minutes.

Let’s be honest—life insurance probably isn’t on your list of fun things to research. But locking in a policy now could mean huge peace of mind for your family down the road. And getting covered is actually a lot easier than you might think.

With Best Money’s term life insurance marketplace, you can compare top-rated policies in minutes and find coverage that works for you. No long phone calls. No confusing paperwork. Just straightforward quotes, starting at just $7 a month, from trusted providers so you can make an informed decision.

AR with Markers

It is just most widely used type of AR right now, though the only limitation it have is requirement of markers which displays 3D object on top of it.

It is very is to understand how it works,

  1. First you open the AR App.
  2. Place the marker provided by the App developer.
  3. Scan the marker with the AR App camera.
  4. 3D model will be shown to you.

The problem you can face with this approach that if you don’t have the marker then you can’t see the app. Though mostly people with such apps carry markers with them.

This is more preferred for the promotion of the company since the user of AR get to have brochure or pamphlet or visiting card of the promoting company.

Marker-less AR

In this approach you don’t require the marker instead you can place your marker on the plane surface by detecting flat surfaces.

It reduces the requirement of marker to show the 3D object, though there are few technologies that are allowing the use of AR without markers.

Previously Pokemon Go is not actually marker-less AR, in that the Pokemons are just superimposed on your camera to give the feel of Marker-less AR. Nowadays due to higher configuration of the phones, PoGo has become much more closer to markerless AR.

Second, let’s figure out what you mean by Virtual Reality headset. (Head Mounted Display).

But first, the good news; you don’t need a headset. Most AR apps you just ‘point’ the phone at the object that’s being augmented, and the AR displays on the screen directly. Like Pokemon Go, but better.

To find these apps, you’d just search for AR or Augmented reality on the Google play store. So, frustration aside, let’s talk about actual HMD’s that do AR.

HMD’s typically are immersive, which means you can’t use them for Augmented Reality. They enclose your eyes, and frequently don’t have the camera exposed.

Putting a display right in front of you might be a little weird, as what the camera sees is not really what your eyes see. For one thing, I don’t know of an Android phone that has dual front facing cameras, so you’re not going to get stereoscopic depth perception anymore; also, the field of view of the phone is way different from our eyes (to be fair, VR HMD’s also have a field of view that is less than most eyes, but most of them are workable).

There are HMD’s that are used for AR, but they have specialized optics. For example, the hololens by Microsoft. It lets you see the real world with your eyes, and the virtual is overlayed. This presents a wrinkle; the virtual can’t completely block reality, so the images look like a hologram. The other thing to note, is that it’s a whole stand alone computer, so there’s no need for your android phone.

Tom’s hardware has a great list; none of them need your phone, so it’s not really applicable. Augmented Reality Glasses: What You Can Buy Now (or Soon)

I did find something like this for your phone, called the Amazon.com: Docooler AR Headset Box Glasses 3D Holographic Hologram Display Holographic Projector for Smart Phones with 4.2-5.7in Virtual Handle: Industrial & Scientific

I also found this:

Amazon.com: HoloKit: Cardboard-like Augmented / Mixed Reality Headset For Everyone. Compatible with iPhone and Android via ARKit, ARCore, Tango.: Home Audio & Theater

If you thought regular HMD’s like the Vive were klunky, take a look at these things! It’s complicated by the need to show the real world thorugh glass, and still have the phone close to your eyes. I don’t think you’re going to get a great experience from it, but it’s certainly going to work.

Finding apps for these devices may be tough. You need something that doesn’t do a camera pass through, but does show the AR elements.

There’s a really great company making an HMD for the iPhone; it looks almost exactly like a Hololens, but includes the iPhone and a controller. It’s great hardware. It is called the Mira Prism. Mira Prism - Smartphone Powered AR Headset However, they don’t have an Android version out yet, partly as the optics require a precise phone, so it would be something like “Samsung S8 only” but hey, the Gear VR works that way, so I’m hoping.

VR is a little easier, as there are plenty of VR apps on Google Play or in the Oculus Store on Gear VR. (I assume Google Daydream has an integrated store also), as well as the link that Robert gave.

I want an “infinite resolution code editor”. Basically, remake the software developer’s interface, taking advantage of the aspects of AR/VR enabling a more fluid, dynamic view of source code, and then do the same for debugging executing code. Make something that would put the computer interfaces depicted in Minority Report to shame. Please.

I recently discovered PNC Finder which is a standalone app for finding nearby ATMs. It is available for Android and iOS and works pretty well -- if you actually need it.

The AR type view is a little hokey because it has a hard time giving you feedback on how far away the ATMs are, but it looks cool. Also people probably think you are filming them when you hold you phone up at that angle.

Significantly better is the compass-like view. The circles tell you how far away the ATMs are and tapping on the points tells you what kind of ATM it is, Lobby, Bank, outdo

I was just in New York and got a chance to use this app in less familiar territory and was amazed with how many PNC's there were and how the app actually made them significantly easier to find. Just don't walk into people.

There are two worlds and a mix of the two creates augmented reality

There is a real-world that we see and observe around us. Then there is a virtual 3d computer graphics generated world. With Head mount displays and computer vision algorithms (marker tracking) you can trick your brain into overlaying the virtual objects onto the real-world. And calculations are done on the fly to ensure the virtual objects stay in place over the real world even as you move your head around wearing an HMD (or your hands around if you are holding a hand-held device).

For Making AR app the best thing you can use is UNITY editor and any of the good SDK of AR (i will suggest to go with Vuforia as now in unity’s latest version it comes embedded).

Next you have to register to Vuforia and get the license key and paste it in unity after that make a database of the images that you want to scan and than just make or download 3D models and just show them on scanning of the target image.

Something having to do with a physical real world outdoor location. I believe the latest Hololens does not work outdoors.

When AR technology works flawlessly outdoors, and has high ergonomics and doesn’t hinder the players mobility, I think we may see an explosion of location based AR applications that are truly out of this world.

Augmented reality at the current state of affairs is non existent.

You would need a pair of AR glasses, similar as the ominous Google glass. However, it's not there yet.

Probably need to wait for Apple, they usually nail the hardware & software balance.

In the meantime you can catch Pokémon.
