I had the same problem. 1. Save all of your files to EA Games/The Sims 2/Downloads "please not the capitals" 2. For rar files on a mac, download unrar-x. Its free. 3. Once a rar. file is downloaded, Double click it , and move it to Downloads. 4. For zip. files and packages, simply move them into the downloads folder. 5. For sims 2 packs, the game comes with the sims 2 pack installer. Simply use that and enjoy you content. Some good websites are Modthesims2, insiminator, Sapphire sims 2, The sims resource "pay site", and all about style.

Alright, i have added a related link that will bring you to something called WinRAR. you need to download WinRAR in order to extract the files and use them in your game. don't worry, the program is free and completely safe.
when that is downloaded, go into
My Documents/EA Games/The Sims 2
then create a new folder and name it "Downloads" put everything you download for the sims 2 into this folder.
the files should look like a stack of three books, when they are in your newly created folder, select them all and right click, then select "Extract here"
when the process is finished you can safely delete the "Stacks of books" but keep the white files in that folder at all times.
now when you start your game you might get a pop up saying you have new content in your game, just select the box that says you want to keep the content in the game and then close the game and restart.
now when you go into create a sim, or buy mode, all of the custom content that you have downloaded will appear in your game!
First, find an item that you like. If it says .Rar, you need a software to download, so I won't get into that.
But if it's .zip, it's good! Press it and save to desktop. Then, right click it and press, Extract All. Extract it to your Sims 2 Downloads folder. If you don't have one, make one and name it Downloads. Like I said, extract it to your Downloads folder. During this, do NOT have the game running, or it will not work. Then start up your game, and it should be there! If not, I'm deeply sorry!
Well it depends what you want to make.
To make clothes and hair you need the sims 2 BodyShop. It's very easy to use once you get used to it.
Search for tutorials on YouTube.
Then you just have to make your creation into a package file and post in on a website, for example ModTheSims.
You could create your own website but putting your creation on someone else's would be a lot more easy :)
